JOB DESCRIPTION: As the primary contact for Safeway customers, the Cashier-Checker provides friendly, courteous, and helpful service.
Primarily responsible for operating computerized cash register to itemize and total customer’s purchases.
This is done by passing items in front of an electronic UPC code scanner, or inputting UPC information into a keyboard.
Reviews price sheets to note price changes in sale items.
Records prices and departments, subtotals taxable items, and totals purchases on cash register.
Collects cash, check, or electronic payments from customer and makes change for transactions.
Places purchased items in bags.
May weigh items, redeem food stamps, WIC checks, promotional coupons, cash checks, check ID for liquor and cigarettes, sell stamps.
May return merchandise found defective or unwanted by the customer to the appropriate location.
May trouble shoot card reader or scanner errors.
May replace paper in printers.
May deal with customer complaints or price disputes.
May answer telephone or make or answer intercom pages.
JOB DUTIES: Safeway Cashier-Checker employees are generally responsible for completing the following job duties: 1.
Provide customer service as currently defined by the employer within the scope of the position and within company policy.
2.
Handle groceries of varying weights.
3.
Operate electronically scanning cash register to total customers’ final bill.
4.
Responsible for ringing up all merchandise including product on bottom of grocery cart.
Receive payment for customer purchase.
5.
Bag groceries in plastic, canvas or paper bags.
Lift bags into grocery cart.
Offer customer assistance with carry out, and perform that task if a Courtesy Clerk is not available.
6.
Maintain a clean and safe work area.
Includes check stand area (belt and glass), and facing and straightening up end display areas near check stand.
7.
Replace stock in displays surrounding the checkout area as needed.
8.
Other duties as assigned.
JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS: 1.
Ability to follow company customer service procedures.
Demonstrated prior customer service skills or related experience.

Ability to interact with customers and co-workers.
3.
Ability to understand and follow directions.
4.
Ability to use the cash register and use math skills to calculate prices.
Ability to handle all forms of tender.
5.
Knowledge of products, product pricing and store layout.
6.
Successful completion of company Cashier-Checker training Course.
